ROSEMARY BROOKS
Color is the wellspring of my work. As an artist, it’s my first love. Next comes finding forms, arranging them, and using line. When I look at art, I love bold, strong, vivid color presented realistically, abstractly or anywhere in between.
When I paint, objects or “scenes” are only a guide and very welcome as subject matter. Otherwise what I strive for is organizing the two dimensions of a flat surface with the colors, forms and lines that I choose. This approach gives me a a great deal of freedom and a challenge to find what I like inside the confines of a piece of paper or sheet of canvas. I guess you could call me a “Formalist.”
The natural world, the environment, whether urban or rural, always captures my attention. I can’t look at it long enough or closely enough to ever satisfy myself. As a native New Yorker I grew up living within the urban grid and I remain fascinated by its strict glass and steel, brick and mortar geometry, but I also welcome the refreshment of street trees, the front and back gardens filled with blooming plant life. It’s understandable I think, when I consider my last 5 years of work, that I’ve been painting flowers, gardens and landscapes—using acrylic paints on canvas and watercolors and gouache on paper. No surprise either that Spring has become my favorite season and subject. These brightly colored paintings are my way of “owning” what I find glorious in my environment, “possessing” what I see, and expressing those feelings for all to see, so they too can experience the joy along with me.
